How a 17-Key Kalimba (Thumb Piano) Works
The Kalimba, originally rooted in traditional African Mbira lamellophones, creates sound when flexible spring steel tines are plucked and vibrate against a solid wooden resonant soundbox. Unlike a piano where notes ascend strictly left-to-right, a Kalimba organizes notes in an alternating V-shape from the lowest center tine (C4) outward to the shortest outer tines. This layout makes it easy to play sweet arpeggiated harmonies and chord dyads with your left and right thumbs.
