How Client-Side Autocorrelation Pitch Detection Works
When a guitar string is plucked, it does not produce a simple pure sine wave. Instead, it vibrates with dozens of conflicting higher-order harmonics and string overtones. A simple Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) peak detector often mistakenly locks onto the 2nd or 3rd harmonic instead of the true fundamental frequency.
Measures how closely the incoming audio waveform matches time-shifted versions of itself. By isolating the exact cycle lag period, it calculates the true fundamental acoustic pitch regardless of overtone strength.
Parabolic vertex interpolation across peak autocorrelation bins enables cent precision within ±0.5 cents, well below human pitch discrimination thresholds.
Audio is read directly into typed Float32 arrays in browser RAM and garbage collected immediately. Zero audio data is ever transmitted or stored.
