How to Calculate Paint Needed: Formula & Pro Tips

Standard Wall Calculation Formula

To calculate wall area by hand:

Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width)
Gross Wall Area = Perimeter × Wall Height
Net Area = Gross Area - (Door Area + Window Area)
Gallons = (Net Area × Coats) ÷ 380 sq ft/gal

For a 12×12 room with 8-foot walls: Perimeter is 48 ft, gross wall area is 384 sq ft. Subtracting one standard door (21 sq ft) and two windows (30 sq ft) yields 333 sq ft net. Two coats equal 666 sq ft, requiring approx. 1.75 gallons (2 gallon cans purchased).

Pro Painting Coverage Rules

  • Always plan for 2 coats: Unless doing an identical same-color touchup, one coat leaves roller streaks and uneven sheen.
  • Drywall absorption: Fresh unprimed drywall absorbs 25% to 40% more paint. Apply an inexpensive PVA primer first before expensive color coats.
  • Buy all paint in one batch: Paint mixed on different days or in separate 1-gallon cans may have slight dye variations. Professional painters "box" multiple cans together in a 5-gallon bucket for 100% color consistency.
  • Ceiling paint: Flat ceiling paint has higher hiding power and spatters less than wall eggshell or satin.
