How to Calculate Concrete: Formulas & Expert Pouring Tips

Concrete in North America is ordered by the cubic yard (which equals 27 cubic feet). For small jobs under 1 yard, pre-mixed bags (such as Quikrete or Sakrete) from hardware stores are cheaper and easier than ready-mix delivery trucks.

Cubic Yards Formula for Slabs
Cubic Yards = (Length ft × Width ft × (Thickness in / 12)) ÷ 27

Example: A 10 ft × 10 ft patio at 4 inches thick = (10 × 10 × 0.333) ÷ 27 = 1.23 cubic yards.

Round Column & Pier Formula
Volume = (π × Radius² × Depth ft) ÷ 27

Example: A 12-inch Sonotube (0.5 ft radius) that is 4 ft deep = (3.14159 × 0.25 × 4) ÷ 27 = 0.116 cu yards per pier.
