How to Play Connect Four
How to play, column drop controls, mathematical center dominance theory, and winning double-threat 7-trap strategies.
Connect Four is a classic vertical two-player strategy game played on a 7-column by 6-row grid. Players take turns dropping colored discs (Red and Yellow) from the top into a vertically suspended grid. The pieces fall straight down, occupying the lowest available space within the chosen column.
The first player to form a continuous line of four discs of their own color horizontally, vertically, or diagonally wins the match. If all 42 slots are filled and neither player has achieved a four-in-a-row, the game is declared a draw.

Pro Tips & Winning Strategies
Center Column Dominance (Column 4)
The center column intersects 16 distinct four-in-a-row winning vectors—compared to only 3 on the outer edges. Always prioritize controlling the center column from turn one.
Create Double-Threat "7-Traps"
Build horizontal chains where both ends remain open simultaneously. When your opponent blocks one side, you immediately connect 4 on the other end to claim victory.
Never Give Free Platforms
Before dropping a chip into any column, check what row sits directly above it. Never drop a chip that gives your opponent the exact platform needed to complete their four.
Control Odd vs. Even Rows
As player 1 (Red), you have a mathematical advantage on odd rows (1, 3, 5). As player 2 (Yellow), you hold the advantage on even rows. Direct your winning diagonals onto your favorable rows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Connect Four mathematically solved?▼
Yes! Connect Four was mathematically solved in 1988 by Victor Allis and James D. Allen. Under perfect play, the first player (Red) is guaranteed to force a win by opening in column 4 (the center column).
Can I play Connect Four against a friend on the same device?▼
Yes! Toggle the mode switch at the top to "2 Players (Local)" to play turn-based pass-and-play on the same phone, tablet, or desktop computer.
How does the Computer AI calculate its moves?▼
Our AI uses the Minimax algorithm with alpha-beta pruning. On Hard difficulty, it evaluates board states multiple moves in advance to block traps and capitalize on forced wins.
What is the best opening move in Connect Four?▼
Dropping your initial chip in Column 4 (the exact center) is mathematically the single best opening move, maximizing the number of possible winning lines across the grid.
Is Connect Four free and unblocked on school and office networks?▼
Yes. Learntrix Connect Four is 100% free, requires no signup or extension download, and runs smoothly on school Chromebooks and restricted networks.
